The Canadian ETF industry had 430 ETFs, with 585 listings, assets of US$81 Bn, from 17 providers listed on 2 exchanges, according to ETFGI’s July 2016 global ETF and ETP industry insights report.
Record levels of assets were also reached at the end of July for ETFs/ETPs listed globally at US$3.343 trillion, in the United States at US$2.367 trillion, in Europe at US$539.16 Bn and in Japan at US$191.82 Bn.
“Investor confidence returned during July after the surprising result of June’s Brexit vote. The S&P 500 was up 3.7% in July. Developed markets outside the U.S. gained 5.1% and emerging markets were up 4.8%” according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner at ETFGI.
Net inflows gathered by ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada in July were US$180 Mn marking the 21st consecutive month of net inflows. Commodity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of US$66 Mn, and fixed income ETFs/ETPs gathered US$32 Mn, while equity ETFs/ETPs experienced net outflows of US$75 Mn.
YTD, ETFs/ETPs have gathered a record YTD level of US$8.51 Bn in net inflows. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered a record YTD level of net inflows of US$4.15 Bn, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with US$3.55 Bn, and commodity ETFs/ETPs which have gathered a record YTD US$205 Mn in net inflows.
Mirae Horizons gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in July with US$147 Mn, followed by Vanguard with US$131 Mn and RBC Global AM with US$21 Mn net inflows.
YTD, BMO AM gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows with US$4.16 Bn, followed by Vanguard with US$1.52 Bn and iShares with US$1.25 Bn net inflows.
In July 2016, 8 new ETFs/ETPs were launched by 2 providers.
