TMX Group today announced that Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) now lists more than 100 exchange traded funds and…
exchange traded notes (ETFs). This significant milestone was achieved with the listing of the Horizons BetaPro Winter-Term NYMEX Crude Oil ETF and three other Horizons BetaPro ETFs last week. Other ETF fund providers with products on TSX include BMO Asset Management, Claymore Investments Inc., Invesco PowerShares and iShares Funds. Nineteen new ETFs have listed on TSX so far in 2009.
The 103 ETFs listed on TSX offer exposure to a wide variety of sectors, asset classes and investment strategies; the total market cap of the ETFs is approximately $28.1 billion. ETF trading accounted for 14% of total trading on TSX in June 2009, which represents a year-over-year increase of 374%.
“Canadians are increasingly turning to ETFs as an important investment tool, and the surge in ETF listings and trading on TSX reflects this heightened demand,” noted Ungad Chadda, Senior Vice President, Toronto Stock Exchange. “We’re very proud that ETF providers look to TSX as their listing destination.”
Toronto Stock Exchange was the creator of the first ETF in the world in March 1990 and ETFs continue to be a key element of TSX’s growth strategy. In May 2009, TMX Group launched an ETF investor information portal on www.TMXmoney.com, its financial information website. The new portal provides in-depth information on ETFs, including basic education, trading strategies and resources for investors.
