Net new assets in the European ETF market slowed to \u20ac3.7bn in April from the \u20ac5.2bn we saw in March.<\/p>\n

Equity<\/strong> outflows continued (-\u20ac2.2bn after -\u20ac1.7bn the month before) driven by massive outflows from developed market equities (-\u20ac3.4bn). Emerging markets equities, for their part, recorded a significant rebound (\u20ac1.3bn from \u20ac0.4bn).<\/p>\n

Fixed income<\/strong> ETFs enjoyed huge inflows (\u20ac4.1bn) for a fifth consecutive month driven by developed corporate bonds and high yield bonds.<\/p>\n

Flows into commodity ETFs<\/strong> were virtually flat.Smart Beta ETFs flows resumed their positive trend with \u20ac1.3bn of inflows, once again mostly on the quality factor.<\/p>\n

ESG ETFs<\/strong> flows were very similar to those we saw in March (\u20ac477m vs. \u20ac406m) with every one of the ESG categories still positive.<\/p>\n

Focus: Sentiment reverses for Eurozone equities<\/strong><\/p>\n

Monthly outflows from eurozone equities continued in April, with outflows of \u20ac2.5bn matching those we saw in March. The year-to-date total now stands at -\u20ac6.9bn.<\/p>\n

Since March last year, the outflows amount to \u20ac17bn. Eurozone manufacturing PMI has lost 7 points over the same period (dropping from 55.2 to 47.9).<\/p>\n

However, PMIs enjoyed a slight rebound in April for the first time since June 2018. Investor sentiment \u2013 still stubbornly against Europe \u2013 may change should this continue.<\/p>\n

Overall, stabilising PMIs, stronger-than-expected Q1 GDP growth, the pro-European stance in Spain following the latest election and the recovery we expect to see in H2 should sustain eurozone equities.<\/p>\n

Our research shows that there has, historically, been a significant correlation between eurozone equity ETF flows and eurozone manufacturing PMI.<\/p>\n

Therefore, should the PMI rebound further, this could lead to a trend reversal in Eurozone equity flows. The graph below shows what could happen.<\/p>\n
