We start with the classic Implied Volatility Index <\/strong>, the VIX <\/strong>(daily data from June 2023 to the close of March 19):<\/p>\r\n

We start with the classic Implied Volatility Index <\/strong>, the VIX <\/strong>(daily data from June 2023 to the close of March 19):
This indicator has a classic contrarian trend compared to the S&P500 Index and, more importantly, peaks sharply at market lows, as clearly shown in the chart. For this reason, it is also called the “fear index.”<\/p>\r\n

Recently, the VIX reached a peak of nearly 28 points on March 11 <\/strong>(see blue arrow), historically high levels. Simultaneously, the S&P500 Index hit a clear low on March 13 <\/strong>(see red arrow). Currently, the VIX is declining but remains above the psychological threshold of 20 points <\/strong>, where the long-term average lies. This signals lingering “fear” linked to the S&P500 correction from its February 19 high (see green arrow), which resulted in an 8.5% decline.<\/p>\r\n

If we interpret these U.S. market concerns, the primary suspect is the new Trump administration\u2019s tariff policy, whose scope remains unclear due to contradictory statements.<\/p>\r\n

This fear did not affect Europe, where major equity indices experienced only a mild correction and have already rebounded in recent days. However, an anomaly persists in Europe, which I will illustrate:<\/p>\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n

The top graph shows daily data for the VSTOXX <\/strong>(Europe\u2019s “fear index,” tied to the Eurostoxx50 Index), while the bottom graph shows the analogous VIX. Both include 3-month Bollinger Bands.<\/p>\r\n

The two graphs show striking similarities, with both peaking sharply on March 11 <\/strong>(blue arrows) above the upper band, followed by a decline that still keeps values above the 3-month average.<\/p>\r\n

In practice, Implied Volatility confirms that the divergence between European and U.S. equity price trends is a clear anomaly, likely to correct in the coming weeks.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n
