{"id":19533,"date":"2019-02-14T09:11:59","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T09:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/starthostunlimiteddmffassi-ss.stackstaging.com\/etfworld.co.uk\/?p=19533"},"modified":"2020-05-12T10:58:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T09:58:14","slug":"lyxor-etf-money-monitor-january-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etfworld.com\/co.uk\/lyxor-etf-money-monitor-january-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Lyxor ETF Money Monitor January 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A happy new year  for European ETFs&#8230;..<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Marl\u00e8ne Hassine Konqui, Head of ETF Research and Kristo Durbaku, ETF Research Analyst<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Net new assets in the European ETF market tripled to \u20ac7.6bn in January from the \u20ac2.5bn we saw in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Equity flows<\/strong> rebounded (\u20ac1.6bn from -\u20ac1.5bn) led by strong inflows into emerging markets equities (\u20ac2.4bn).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In contrast, their developed market counterparts suffered a poor start due to some significant outflows (-\u20ac2bn) from US equities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Having lagged way behind equities in 2018, <strong>fixed income ETFs<\/strong> enjoyed their best month ever (\u20ac6.2bn), led by developed and emerging market government bonds (\u20ac2.2bn and \u20ac2.4bn respectively).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Smart Beta ETFs<\/strong> also enjoyed a largely positive month with net new assets of \u20ac1.4bn, but commodity flows continued their seemingly endless decline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Special Focus: Investors turn defensive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Investors continued to reinforce their defensive positioning in January after all  of the equity market volatility we saw in Q4.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This helped to sustain inflows into some Smart Beta strategies. Net new assets of \u20ac1.4bn \u2013 split between developed (\u20ac1bn) and emerging (\u20ac400m) markets \u2013 amounted to  the second-best month over one year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quality strategies and income-generating ETFs led the way and reached a record high of \u20ac1bn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nearly all of these flows were concentrated in developed markets. Europe took the lion\u2019s share with \u20ac451m of inflows \u2013 another new record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is all the more remarkable given traditional European equities  suffered outflows of \u20ac1.3bn. Attractive equity valuations kept investors interested and invested, despite the significant economic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Investment into other defensive strategies were also significant.
